Placebo : Related Information

The name Placebo is said to have been chosen because of it’s latin origins meaning ‘I will please.’ Their debut album ‘Placebo’ was released in 1996 at the height of the Britpop era, it was a great success with the biggest single being ‘Nancy Boy.’ At the time of the success of the first album there was trouble within the band original drummer Robert Schultzberg was not getting on with the other two members, Molko describes, ‘Robert and I could be in the room together without wanting to be violent.’ The Placebo tour went to America with Schultzberg still on board but after completing their US dates and two shows in Paris they parted ways. Steve Hewitt replaced him and they went on to open many shows for David Bowie on his ‘Outside Tour’ this also magnified their success at the time.

Their next two albums saw a change in sound, including lots of glam rock influence this was due to the departure of Schultzberg, ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ (1998) was a success and ‘Black Market Music’ (2000) was also received well. ‘Black Market Music’ added some hip-hop to their rock sound.

The ever-changing three piece then released further albums includin ‘Meds’ which featured artists Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. With this album the Placebo tour joined Linkin Park and other acts on Projekt: Revolution in 2007. Steve Hewitt left the band the same year, replaced by Steve Forrest.

The album ‘Battle for the Sun’ was released in 2009 and enjoyed great succes and won Placebo an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Alternative album. The Placebo tour went across Europe in late 2009 finishing with their biggest tour to date at the O2 Arena London. They toured across South America, Austrailia and Southeast Asia earlier this year and they find themselves back in the UK in September.
